Chronicles of Arcania: Night at the Beachhead

Here we are with the first of hopefully many little written story accounts that take place during the Revolutionary War of Arcania, circa 75-79 AC (Remember takes place entirely after 896 AC), when Arcania was trying to separate from the greater Mannish Empire by holding the island.

This initial part occurs in 77 AC, following the successful creation of an Imperial beachhead on Mayhab beach, due South of Charlescoven. (more…)

Tactical analysis is idle fun

Some time recently, a month or so, I decided to plot the definitive map of Arcania (The ill-fated homeland of Igon and Rain, destroyed in the opening chapters of Book 1).

Arcania of course has a fairly rich history. In the Dark Ages, the period of a few thousand years following the Great Cataclysm, it was briefly inhabited by the shamanic peoples of the Der’o Fasciid, and there are some of their relics still around the island. For much of the time after the Fasciid died out and into the First Age, however, it was considered uninhabitable, due to it’s seasonal storms, dense undergrowth, and generally antagonistic wildlife. It wasn’t until after Michael Arcanon landed on the island in 73 AC, that it began to actually seem livable (Arcanon survived on the island alone for 2 years after all). The island was then the dominant theatre of the Revolutionary War, as Arcanon fought with his brethren for freedom and independence from the Mannish Empire, succeeding in 79 AC. In more modern times of course, it has been laid waste to, and magical experimentation has driven the local climate into a frozen, arid, tundra.

Statistically, Arcania is quite small, it’s furthest two points (Northpeak to Southwatch) are about 1475 miles apart. You could walk from one end of that line to the other in about a month and a half. It covers approximately 325,600 square miles, making it a little bigger than Namibia, the 34th largest country on Earth (The United Kingdom being 79th, with Russia at #1 with over 6.6 million square miles). Mathematics is not my favourite subject so correct me if I’ve miscalculated that… It’s highest peak was at just under 6000 metres above sea level, and (being an island) it’s lowest is at sea level.

Here’s a map of Arcania, with all the details I’m currently basing my accounts and analyses on.

Map of Arcania

I’ve had a lot of fun working out how the Revolutionary War was handled, like the bluff of troops at Lamburg while Imperial (For some reason my characters are always fighting empires…wierd) troops landed near Charlescoven, meaning they had about 10 days march to reach Arcania City, assuming Arcanon couldn’t route them at the chokepoint immediately South of it (From there, it would take about two more weeks for enemy forces to reroute to the second chokepoint and reach the city). The issue there being that initial chokepoint is about 30 miles wide, though if they were successful at holding it they could then do a lot of damage from the clifftops between the chokepoints with archery.

The more I figure out about the War, really the more I want to write about it and depict it in comic form, so I’m going to have a rethink about what to do after Remember’s storyline is finished. Meanwhile though, would anyone here like me to post up some brief literary snippets from the occasion?
