I’ll admit, I feel a tad evil scripting this arc.
As competent as the Order is, not once have I entertained the notion of them actually beating Sildyu in this battle. They just aren’t capable enough as characters for it. As a team, they’re powerful folk, yes, but Sildyu has been around and developed as a character for the entire length of Remember, and developed characters very rarely get offed by less-developed characters. Even then, it’s usually only done to impress upon the audience how powerful the less-developed character is, so is rarely done for long-running villains.
And speaking of powerful, consider what Sildyu has done in her lifetime. Before Remember even began, she had the Talisman of the Dragon King (meaning she had gotten it from the actual dragon king, and did so through genocide of the royal dragon species), and she then conquered virtually every nation on the planet, as well as surviving numerous assassination attempts (many of them far less successful than even Book 2’s effort). It’s tempting to say “and then the holy warriors of light came along and trashed her like moldy yoghurt”, but it just won’t happen. It’d be like a small dinghy taking down the Yamato.
So you may then wonder, why did I even incorporate the Order of the Driving Lance into this battle? Why introduce and group these characters if I’m not intending for them to succeed? Well, that’s a question to be answered very soon, and one that has been unfolding for years…
Now if you’ll excuse me, I am very much behind in making the next arc, which answers that question, so now I’m going to spend as much of the week as possible making comics.
